I wrote this song after meeting a hunger striker from Turkey a couple of years ago. I went to a solidarity protest in Dublin, there were thousands of us. Bernadette McAlliskey spoke at the event, I have to say I have the greatest admiration for the work Bernadette has done throughout the years. She is a true asset to the working class on this island and around the world.
The stories I learned about Turkey brought back the dark days of 1981. I was 10 years old then, but I'll never forget the tension in the air, it was gripping. The province was a flame with anger, most of it directed towards London and of course Margaret Thatcher.

Umus Sahingoz. Died on 14th September 2001 after 330 Days on Death Fast. Age 32.
I later went on to meet with people from one of the groups involved with the hunger strikes at an event held in London earlier this year.
I feel sad when I hear that people in my country are still ignoring the hunger strikers pleas for a boycott of Turkish goods and holidays in Turkey.
The world has become a cold place, paradoxically since the end of the cold war I feel.

Bigots Scaring Children.

They bombed our children, threw stones, bottles, bags of urine and whatever they could lay their hands on. All this along with disgusting sectarian abuse was hurled at little schools girls, some as young as four years old.
I wrote this song to tell the people of the world what was happening. The protest eventually came to an end, but I doubt the little girls it was directed at will ever forget the depth of hatred they witnessed.

A terrified young girl from Holy Cross school walking the daily gauntlet of hatred.
This song addresses the need for education, awareness and understanding. Just some of the things we need if we're to build a better society here.
Bigotry has to end from every quarter... Our children deserve better.

The Rose of Armagh.

Rosemary Nelson.
Murdered on Monday March 15th 1999. Yet again another murder connected with strong rumours of collusion between loyalist paramilitaries and British army intelligence services.

I attended the funeral of Rosemary Nelson, it was a numbing experience. The town of Lurgan was flooded by people from across the province, we came together in solidarity and in outrage at this horrific act. We walked through the narrow streets before finally laying to rest Rosemary Nelson 'The Rose of Armagh.'

There have been countless murders in our province that stink of British army involvement.
I compared her life to that of a Rose trying to grow in a barren ground. In this troubled land the system is quite barren for some and a paradise for others. Her struggle to further the cause of human rights was extremely difficult. Rosemary paid the ultimate price. Pat Finucane fell victim to a similar fate.

I don't know.

The world is in one big mess, at least that's how some people prefer things. It's all just one distraction after another. While our eyes are turned one way they loot what they can. The workers united will never be defeated, roll on the unity, that's what I say.

'I don't know' was written by my brother Gary during the Gulf war.
I added some lyrics and composed the music.

One of the world's many war criminals at work.
It addresses the state of the environment and social injustices. The false claims from union leaders in the western world that everything is going pretty good, for them maybe.
When the war for oil in Iraq came the song had to be released.
Gary doesn't write many songs these days, which is a great pity. He has such a gift for it.
